Spachner featured
at Living Arts Gallery
“Botanical Fish and Free Swimming Flowers,” a showcase of Karen Spachner’s wild and colorful view of Hawaiian reef fishes and tropical flowers, is featured at the Living Arts Gallery in Hawi through April 21. The artist will be at the gallery from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. April 21. Refreshments will be served.
Spachner’s work is an illustration of reality meeting fantasy, with fantasical bouquets of elephant ear antheriums, birds of paradise, and white orchids providing a roost for birds nesting in an explosion of tropical flowers.

Poetry slam and artist talk at Donkey Mill
Spoken word poet Sharon Olsen hosts a poetry slam at Donkey Mill Art Center from 7 to 9 p.m. April 26. Admission is free and poets are asked to bring two written or memorized poems of their own creation. Each participant will be called to perform his piece and will be judged on overall performance.
The art center will hold an artist talk and potluck with ceramics artist Esther Shimazu from 6 to 8 p.m. April 20. Shimazu is instructing a cherub busts workshop April 21 and 22. Bring pupus to share.
DLNR launches stamp designs contests
The Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife is seeking entries for its 2012-2013 Hawaii Wildlife Conservation Stamp and 2012-2013 Hawaii Game Bird Stamp design contest.
The conservation stamp will be required to validate Hawaii state hunting licenses. The bird stamp will be required for those with licenses intending to hunt game birds. Productions of the stamps will also be available to wildlife stamp collectors.
Artwork for the conservation stamp may depict any game mammal, while the game bird stamp may depict a list of specific game birds found in the contest announcement. DOFAW encourages submission of photo,print or photocopy of a completed oil or acrylic painting that depicts the species of each category within its range of habitat. Artists who send original paintings must include $25 for the cost of returning the artwork.
All entries must be received by May 7. The winners will be notified May 11. Each winner will receive a maximum stipend of $1,000.
